Who Am I
My name is Atheena Matcham and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I have dedicated my work to helping others work through obstacles and invest in growing a better version of themselves. Often overcoming fear can leave us feeling paralyzed. Taking the step to consider asking for help is courageous in itself. I see my role as a cheerleader, a listener, a reflection, an aide in the journey of striving to live authentically in wellness. I work as an ally to empower and sustain a collaborative therapeutic relationship as we work to become "unstuck" and create change.
I have always been drawn to helping others navigate the waters of life. My own life challenges and experience paved the way for my interest in human functioning, healing, and helping. Ultimately, leading me to study and major in Psychology in Undergraduate school. I was fascinated with human relationships, behavior, and the connection between mind and body. I knew that I wanted to continue my career and studies in human relationships and living in wellness. Creating a space for accepting and loving one self has played big part of what has fueled me to continue the journey as a Therapist.
My approach is culturally sensitive, strength based, very warm, and welcoming. I'm an integrative therapist, which means that I draw from several different psychotherapy orientations such as behavioral, humanistic, and systemic. Interventions that I utilize are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, Mindfulness, Play therapy, and Expressive art work. I believe in developing a therapeutic approach that best fits the needs of whomever I am working with.
I received my Masters in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of San Francisco. The past seven years I have been blessed with the opportunity to practice in a multitude of settings with a variety of clients of all ages. My clinical experience has been rich in working with women struggling with eating disorders, youth and adults suffering from low self esteem, anxiety, trauma, depression, and life transitions, children with behavioral and emotional issues, emotional regulation and behavior modification with emotionally disturbed children ages 0-5, families navigating the child welfare system, parent and child visitation, and behavior modification/coaching with adults with ADHD. My clients have ranged from severely emotionally challenged to high functioning in therapy. During the course of my practice, I have also enjoyed facilitating support groups for both men and women. A few projects I have been involved in include "Supporting Father Involvement" men's groups and "Sister Circle" women's healing circles.
Over the years I have developed a strong passion for working with clients seeking mind and body connection. I find it healing to be able to empower women to connect with their stories. Together through the process of art, reflection, and mindfulness we will work to uncover the inner strength that resides within.
